"The Ten Essential Points (Part 1)"

Monthly Tai Chi for Health Instructors Forum - Time Zone 1

September 2024

Yang Cheng-Fu’s 'Ten Essential Points' is regarded by many tai chi practitioners as classic, almost as a part of “tai chi bible”. Yang was one of the most significant figures in the 1930’s, known as the father of modern Tai Chi. He was the grandson of the creator of the Yang style of Tai Chi, Yang Lu Chan. Yang Cheng-Fu taught numerous students and is widely acclaimed as one of the greatest masters of Tai Chi and the person most responsible for developing and promoting Tai Chi.

His eldest son, Yang Zhou Zhong, went to Hong Kong after the communists took over China. Dr Paul Lam’s first teacher was his late father-in-law, Mr Lum, who was a close student of Yang Zhou Zhong.

Yang style is the most popular style of tai chi in the world. The world’s most popular set, The 24 Forms, is based on this style. The main creator of the 24 Forms was Master Fu Zhong Weng, a close student of Yang. Master Fu taught at the Better Health Tai Chi Chuan, and stayed at Dr Lam’s home for some time in 1983. "The Ten Essential Points" are relevant for all styles of Tai Chi.

To celebrate the 3rd anniversary of the TCHI Instructors Forum, we are going to explore the ten essential points over the next 3 Forums. Starting in September, Dr Lam will provide an introduction and discuss the first three points.

The first three essential points (September 2024) :

1. Keep the head upright, as if suspended from above, and keep it straight.

2. Depress the chest and raise the upper back.

3. Loosen (relax) the waist.

The main purpose of the TCHI Instructors Forum is to connect with everyone and to share knowledge and friendship. Each month there will be a theme topic, addressed by Dr Lam and invited expert/s. There will be time for questions and comments sent prior, time permitting. You will also have an opportunity to enjoy meeting other participants from all over the world. It is a great way to learn and share as a member of the global tai chi community. Connecting with other tai chi enthusiasts is so helpful! Afterwards, a link to the recording will be sent to all registered participants.

Registration in advance is required. Please email your questions or topics of interest at least two days in advance to service@drlamtaichiworkshops.com. Please put “Forum” in the subject line.

Be sure to register every month!
