Tai Chi for Arthritis for Fall Prevention

Dr. Paul Lam and his team of medical and tai chi experts designed this program to be safe and effective for people who are at increased risk of falling. It will also provide health benefits and improve almost anyone’s quality of life. More than 30 medical studies have shown its efficacy, and millions of people around the world have gained health benefits. This is why the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC.gov), government agencies, and arthritis foundations around the world support it. Tai chi is proven to improve immunity by about 50%. It also relieves stress and improves almost all aspects of health.

Based on the Sun style of tai chi, Tai Chi for Arthritis for Fall Prevention (TCAFP) is easy to learn, effective, and safe. It improves flexibility and muscle strength, increases heart/lung activity, aligns posture, improves balance, and integrates the mind and body.  The TCAFP program includes warm-up and cool-down exercises, the teaching method, knowledge about arthritis and the cause of falls, and how to teach this program safely. This program is the same as the Tai Chi for Arthritis program with the addition of a specialized module to further enhance its efficacy in preventing falls.  Qualified participants who successfully complete the course may be accredited by the Tai Chi for Health Institute to teach this program.

This training has two parts, a self-paced online portion and a live interactive portion. The Self-Paced Instructor Preparation Package (SIPP) is a self-paced virtual program containing essential material plus instruction in the basic movements to train effective and safe instructors. All you have to do is follow the sequence with Dr Lam’s video guides for every step. Complete the quizzes at the end of each unit to move on, and at completion of the SIPP you download your Certificate of Completion to send to the Master Trainer.

After completion of the SIPP, you are ready for the live interactive instructor training workshop to be eligible to become a Tai Chi for Health Institute (TCHI) board-certified instructor. All TCHI Master Trainers around the world can conduct this workshop as listed online at the Tai Chi for Health Institute (tchi.org) website. The listing will indicate whether it is offered on a virtual platform or in-person, and how the hours (minimum of 8) are distributed into 1 or 2 sessions.

Suitable participants include health and fitness professionals or those with other similar qualifications, and experienced tai chi students.

The live workshop is very personal. The Master Trainer will work with you to answer your questions, help to improve your tai chi, and ensure you can teach the program safely and effectively.  There will be discussions, practice sessions, and sharing of skills and knowledge, Question and Answer portions, and, most importantly, personal interaction. The Master Trainer will give you feedback on what you did well and how you can improve your tai chi and teaching skills and connect you to the Tai Chi for Health Institute (TCHI), fellow instructors, and Senior Trainers and offer continual support.

Key Point for Success:

Register early: At least three (3) weeks before the workshop date is recommended.  This is a train-the-trainer workshop - please allow yourself time to prepare.

Part 1 - Complete the Self-paced Instructor Preparation Package (SIPP) Program
The Master Trainer (MT) will email specific payment information and directions to access the SIPP.  Instructions for purchasing the Teaching Tai Chi Effectively book and the Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention Handbook are below.  Completing the Self-paced Instructor Preparation Package (SIPP) is required to qualify you for Part 2.  The SIPP is your introduction to the TCAFP program. You will learn tai chi from the online training, like being in a classroom taught by Dr. Lam.  Practice the movements until you are comfortable with the warmups and the sequence from memory.  After completing all the modules, you will be given a completion certificate.  Send this to the MT.  Part 2 will help you learn to teach the program safely and effectively.

Part 2: Attend the Live Interactive Workshop Training (LIWT)
Complete the scheduled workshop with the MT, complying with the minimum qualifications defined on the TCHI website. In the workshop, you will refine your tai chi, practice the "Stepwise Progressive Teaching Method," discuss and ask questions, network with others, and what's next.  The trainers will work with you until you are ready to become a board-certified instructor**.

** The term Board-Certified Instructor indicates the individual is a Qualified Instructor in a TCHI Program and has joined the TCHI as a Board-Certified Instructor with a yearly membership fee of $25/$40 AUS. For more info, see: https://taichiforhealthinstitute.org/how-to-become-a-certified-tai-chi-instructor-of-dr-paul-lams-programs/

Recertifications - Also a two (2) part process:

All instructors/leaders for the Tai Chi for Health programs must renew their certifications every two years to update their skills and knowledge of the program(s). Dr. Lam and the Tai Chi for Health Institute (TCHI) also recommend everyone complete his new Self-Paced Instructor Preparation Package (SIPP) for their next recertification. The SIPP replaces the paper or Google Docs forms used in the past for homework.  It does have updated information on fall prevention and new Knowledge Units for instructors.

Part 1 Recertifications - Complete the Self-paced Instructor Preparation Package (SIPP) Program

If your instructor certification is current and you have completed a Stage 1 or SIPP online program within the last two (2) years, you are complete with Part 1.  Please note in the comments when you register and send a copy of your certificate to the MT.  Please continue to practice and be prepared.

If it has been over two (2) years since your last recertification, the SIPP is required as homework.  Register first - Instructions will be sent to acquire the SIPP.  It retails for $80 (my discount rate is $56), reflected in the costs below. Individuals will be instructed to purchase their SIPP copy at my discount ($56).  Agency, Corporate, or University accounts with established agreements will be invoiced for the total.   Completing the Self-paced Instructor Preparation Package (SIPP) is required as homework for your recertification.  Existing TCA instructors usually complete the SIPP in 15-20 hours. Please allow ample time before the workshop.

Part 2 Recertifications: Attend the Live Interactive Workshop Training (LIWT)
Attending the scheduled workshop with the MT will further improve your tai chi, practice the "Stepwise Progressive Teaching Method" with new instructors, discuss and ask questions, and meet new instructors.  If you have conflicts with this workshop date, please contact the MT for other LIWT or correspondence options.
