What is Qigong?
"Qigong" comes from two Chinese words. Qi is the life energy inside a person that circulates throughout the body to provide inner strength and maintain good health. Gong is a method of exercise in this context. So Qigong is an exercise which cultivates better and stronger Qi. The stronger Qi you have, the healthier and stronger you are.

Qigong is especially beneficial for health and mental relaxation.

The 5 element Qigong is easy-to-earn and powerfully effective for health.

The Five Element Qigong
According to ancient Chinese philosophy, all things in the universe are made up of five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. These elements have different properties: earth nurtures all living beings, metal is sharp and changeable, water runs down and irrigate the earth while wood is characterised by growth and fire is hot.

The five elements represent five major internal organs of the body. They interrelate and influence each other. While one enhances another, they also negate each other. The positive relationships are: metal gives life to earth, earth gives life to water, water gives life to wood, wood to fire and so on.

The negative relationships also work in a continual circle; earth negates water, water negates fire, fire negates metal, metal negates wood and wood negates earth and so on. The 5 Element Qigong is based on this theory of nature, and is effective in promoting all aspects of health, including relaxation, mental concentration and cultivating Qi.

How to do Qigong well
The ultimate goal is to use your conscious mind to direct the Qi, use Qi to direct your physical body, thus combining the mind, Qi and body as one co-ordinated entity. This may sound challenging, but the actual learning and practice is relatively easy. With regular practice you will progress steadily to the ultimate goal. You will gain health benefits almost right from the start of your practice. The most enjoyable part is the practice, and the many health benefits you gain as you progress.

This workshop will be conducted virtually using the Zoom platform.

New Certifications:

For this training, there is a requirement to attend the equivalent of one day of training using the Zoom platform, and then attend a 1-hour virtual practicum with one of the Master Trainers.

Preparation for this training includes reading the book, Teaching Tai Chi Effectively, and working through the DVD, Qigong for Health.  In addition, the completion/submission of a quiz is required prior to the first day of the training, as well as a recording of your attempt at performing the entire Five Elements Qigong  routine.  The recording will be done on the Zoom platform and the link (or MP4) sent to the Master Trainers a minimum of 7-10 days before the first training segment.

The virtual training will be scheduled as 2 segments of 4 hours.  For this training, the 2 virtual training segments will be from 9:00AM to 1:00PM on  May 2 (Sunday) and May 3 (Monday).  These training segments will be conducted using the Zoom platform.  Your space must be arranged so that you can be seen from "nose to toes."  There is no charge to use Zoom (that is, you do not have to have a paid account to attend the training).  No travel is required for this training.

For the practicum, the 1-hour session will be scheduled individually during the three weeks after the training component is completed.  The training completion certificate will be issued at the successful conclusion of the virtual assessment.

Registration closes April 6, 2021.

Instructor Recertifications:

No recertifications are being done as part of this training.  Recertifications/updates are being done virtually on an individual basis with the Master Trainer that originally certified you.  The process will be to complete the written assignment packet and then spend an hour on Zoom with the Master Trainer.  The Zoom session will include the usual recertification/update activities: doing the warm-ups, the Tai Chi routine(s) you are updating, and teaching one form using the Stepwise Progressive Teaching Method.  There will also be discussion of safety, teaching effectively, and any other topics, as appropriate.  Contact the Master Trainer that originally certified you for further information about updating your certificates.
