Dr. Paul Lam, a family physician in Sydney, Australia, is a world leader in the field of Tai Chi for health improvement. Knowing that tai chi has almost magical effects on the mind, body and spirit, he and his team of educators and tai chi experts designed this tai chi exercise program to be especially beneficial in addressing the needs of children and young people through their teenage years.  Educational research supports the value of mindful movement for youth in settings such as schools, camps, and leisure programs.

Young people love to learn and they learn very fast especially when engaged in a fun activity.  This specially designed tai chi program emphasizes the fun element while developing the mind and body. It is designed with several small building blocks to capture children’s attention, incorporating imagery and games to add appeal.  In the instructor training workshop, you will learn how to adapt the learning method to the age and ability of the youth, discussing learning methods that are more effective as our youth progress through higher levels.  The program works to help our kids succeed despite the challenges of autism, bullying, changing parental norms, drugs, learning disabilities, and special needs.  In fact, studies show that mindful exercises such as tai chi can improve focus, decrease stress, develop resiliency, and improve coordination not only for students with special needs, but students in general.  The adults who practice with them will also enjoy the benefits of the program.

This training has two parts, a self-paced online portion and a live interactive portion. The Self-Paced Instructor Preparation Package (SIPP) is a self-paced virtual program containing essential material plus instruction in the basic movements to train effective and safe instructors. You will purchase the SIPP separately, receiving the link and a discount code after you register for the workshop.   All you have to do is follow the sequence with Dr Lam’s video guides for every step. Complete the quizzes at the end of each unit to move on, and at completion of the SIPP you download your Certificate of Completion to send to the Master Trainer.  After completion of the SIPP, you are ready for the live interactive instructor training workshop to be eligible to become a Tai Chi for Health Institute (TCHI) board-certified instructor.  Please allow plenty of time to complete the SIPP. It usually takes 25-70 hours, depending on your experience.

To be successful, participants must become familiar with the shape and order of the movements using the SIPP and practicing the movements before attending the live interactive portion.

Location

This is a virtual workshop using the Zoom platform. Please download Zoom (you may use the free version). If you haven't used this platform before, Zoom provides videos to help you learn how it works. This is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Find a space in your home suitable for practice, and experiment with Zoom so you learn how to stay within the frame. I will need to see you head to toe. I recommend using painter's tape on the floor to outline the area you will need to stay within. If available, I recommend using a HDMI connection to a larger screen or your television, so you have a larger image.
