Details

Dr Paul Lam, a retired family physician and tai chi master, led a team of tai chi and medical specialists to create this evidence based program. It is easy, enjoyable and safe for people with arthritis to learn. Medical studies have shown the program to relieve pain for people with arthritis and improve their quality of lives, as well as prevent falls for older adults.  For this reason, the Arthritis Foundations around the world and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are giving it their full support. Although especially effective for arthritis and fall prevention, it is a great start for beginners to improve health and wellness. 

4 Day Overview:

DAY 1 and 2: Tai Chi For Arthritis and Tai Chi for Arthritis For Fall Prevention Instructor Qualification Training

DAY 2: REQUIRED For Those Attending For Recertification/Update; Recommended To Attend Both DAY 1 and DAY 2

DAY 3: Seated Tai Chi For Arthritis Instructor Qualification Training and STCA Update

DAY 4: Tai Chi for Arthritis Part 2 Instructor Qualification Training and TCA2 Update

Who Can Come?

Anyone with or without prior tai chi experience can attend this workshop. Preparation is strongly recommended (see http://taichiforhealthinstitute.org/how-to-become-an-instructor-of-dr-lams-program-3/). Current certification in Tai Chi for Arthritis or Tai Chi for Arthritis for Fall Prevention OR attendance at Day 1 & 2 is required in order to attend Seated TCA or TCA2. 

Preparation

Prepare by working with the relevant DVD as much as possible (Tai Chi for Arthritis, TCA2 and/or Seated Tai Chi for Arthritis). It will enable you to gain the maximum benefits and enjoyment from this workshop and improve your ability to become certified in these programs.

The book “Teaching Tai Chi Effectively” and the "Tai Chi for Arthritis & Fall Prevention" handbook will be our texts for this workshop. Review of these texts, and especially the chapters on safety, teaching effectively, Stepwise Progressive Teaching Method and Working with Chronic Conditions is part of your preparation.

Please arrive to the workshop scent free in consideration for those with perfume allergies. Wear loose comfortable clothes and flat shoes suitable for exercise.

Who will be Certified to Teach the Program?

Participants who have met all requirements on completion of the workshop will be eligible to be certified by the Tai Chi for Health Institute to teach this program. A nominal annual membership fee is required. In addition, you must be CPR/First Aid certified.

Updates

At this workshop qualified instructors will have an opportunity to update their existing qualifications. There may be an administration fee, and you will need to complete a written assignment and submit it no later than two weeks prior to the workshop (If updating TCA or TCAFP and attending both Days 1 and 2, no assignment is required.). Be prepared to demonstrate the form associated with the program you are updating. CPR and First Aid training must be up to date. Reminder: Updates are required every two years.

Update assignments are due March 12.

CEU Credits

6.5 contact hours for CEUs per day are available for a small additional fee for Physical Therapists (PTs & PTAs), Occupational Therapists (OTs and OTAs), Advance Practice Registered Nurses (APRN), Registered Nurses (RN), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) & American College of Sports Medicine Certified Professionals (ACSM). Every state and certifying organization has different requirements, and these requirements are subject to frequent changes.  TCHI, as with all CE providing organizations, require that each participant check with their certifying organization to verify that they will accept these CEUs.

The American College of Sports Medicine's Professional Education Committee certifies that the Tai Chi for Health Institute meets the criteria for official ACSM Approved Provider status from 2015-December 2018. Approved Provider #701292.

The Tai Chi for Health Institute is approved as a provider of continuing education by the Kansas State Board of Nursing. The course offering is approved for up to 16.5 contact hours applicable to APRN, RN or LPN relicensure. KS State Board of Nursing Provider Number (SP1426-0119).
