Tai Chi for Arthritis for Fall Prevention

Dr. Paul Lam and his team of medical and tai chi experts designed this program to be safe and effective for people who are at increased risk of falling. It will also provide health benefits and improve almost anyone’s quality of life. More than 30 medical studies have shown its efficacy, and millions of people around the world have gained health benefits. This is why the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC.gov), government agencies, and arthritis foundations around the world support it. Tai chi is proven to improve immunity by about 50%. It also relieves stress and improves almost all aspects of health.

Based on the Sun style of tai chi, Tai Chi for Arthritis for Fall Prevention (TCAFP) is easy to learn, effective, and safe. It improves flexibility and muscle strength, increases heart/lung activity, aligns posture, improves balance, and integrates the mind and body.  The TCAFP program includes warm-up and cool-down exercises, the teaching method, knowledge about arthritis and the cause of falls, and how to teach this program safely. This program is the same as the Tai Chi for Arthritis program with the addition of a specialized module to further enhance its efficacy in preventing falls.  Qualified participants who successfully complete the course may be accredited by the Tai Chi for Health Institute to teach this program.

IMPORTANT DETAILS BELOW - PLEASE READ THOROUGHLY!

Dr Paul Lam, a retired family physician and tai chi master, led a team of tai chi and medical specialists to create this evidence based program. It is easy, enjoyable and safe for people with arthritis to learn. Medical studies have shown the program to relieve pain for people with arthritis and improve their quality of lives, as well as prevent falls for older adults.  For this reason, the Arthritis Foundations around the world and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are giving it their full support. Although especially effective for arthritis and fall prevention, it is a great start for beginners to improve health and wellness.

Virtual - What's Different?

1. You get to attend this workshop from the comfort of your own home or office!

2. Zoom Platform - Download the free Zoom app and review the tutorials so you will be familiar with it prior to the workshop. Senior Trainer Tracey will hold a Zoom Practice so you can practice various features and make sure you can be seen head to toe. This will be held Thursday Jan. 21, 7-8pm EST.

3. Your Introductions - We will use "Breakout Rooms" to pair you with another participant. You will interview each other, then introduce each other at the workshop Saturday morning.

4. Tracey will also hold a skill builder workshop in advance of this workshop to help you refine your forms, to be held Saturday, Jan. 16, 10am - 2pm. Both this workshop and the Zoom Practice are included in your workshop fees.

5. Following the workshop, you will meet with the Master Trainer (Jocelyn) for an individual Zoom session where you will teach her "Single Whip" using the Stepwise Progressive Teaching Method and demonstrate the forms. If you are a new instructor candidate, you will have a follow up Zoom session a few weeks later.

6. Instead of the customary 15 minute tea breaks, we will have 5 minute breaks approximately every hour for a screen break. Please have a drink or snack nearby. We will have the customary 1 hour lunch break.

7. I will send you the TCAFP quiz to complete BEFORE the workshop, and you will email/mail me the completed quiz as well as a video of you performing the TCA forms. (This demonstration is preparatory and does not determine your certification.)

Who Can Come?

Anyone with or without prior tai chi experience can attend this workshop. Preparation is strongly recommended and required for Board Certification. It will take from 20 hours to 200 hours to prepare depending on your experience in tai chi and health education. For example an experienced tai chi practitioner would not need as much time (about 15 to 30 hours) to learn the program from the instructional DVD or online lessons.

Preparation

Prepare by working with the Tai Chi for Arthritis DVD or online lessons as much as possible. This will enable you to gain the maximum benefits and enjoyment from this workshop. This preparation is required for those seeking certification. You will need to submit a video of the TCA forms and complete a written quiz prior to the workshop, due January 9.

The book Teaching Tai Chi Effectively and the Tai Chi for Arthritis & Fall Prevention Handbook will be our texts for this workshop. Review of these texts, and especially the chapters on safety, teaching effectively, Stepwise Progressive Teaching Method and Working with Chronic Conditions is part of your preparation.

The dvd and texts are available at www.taichiproductions.com. Paid participants receive a 20% discount.  A code will be given to you when your booking is confirmed and payment received.

Wear loose comfortable clothes and flat shoes suitable for exercise.

Location

This is a virtual workshop using the Zoom platform. Please download Zoom (you may use the free version). If you haven't used this platform before, Zoom provides videos to help you learn how it works. This is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Find a space in your home suitable for practice, and experiment with Zoom so you learn how to stay within the frame. I will need to see you head to toe. I recommend using painter's tape on the floor to outline the area you will need to stay within. You may also use an appropriate sized area rug. If available, I recommend using a USB connection to a larger screen or your television, so you have a larger image.
